Teaching is both a science and an art and requires a strong service leadership approach. An exceptional teacher builds upon and inclusive relationship to identify prior knowledge, build confidence, and support through the action of strong instructional planning, supportive relationships to build community, active learning, ongoing assessment, targeted feedback, and reflection to improve practices. As a constructionist, I believe we learn through the art of making a product, sharing the product to a wider community, and valuing the “funds on knowledge” a learner brings with them to the experience. Learning is a social process and requires the gradual release of responsibility in which the instructor scaffolds the experience to provide connections real world scenarios and student choice on communication on their understanding of content knowledge. A strong teacher follows best research practices, seeks out new training, is collaborative with other colleagues both within the institution and outside the institution, and is creative in their approaches toward teaching.
